Even premature babies with fetal lung maturity are at higher risk of morbidity
The study was a retrospective cohort study from a single institution during a period of 12 years. Neonatal outcomes of women who were delivered following documented fetal lung maturity at weeks 36, 37 and 38 were compared with women having a planned birth at weeks 39, 40 and 41. Neonatal outcomes examined included: neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission, length of stay (ALOS) in the neonatal intensive care unit, total neonatal respiratory morbidity (Tot resp morbid), cases of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), respiratory morbidity (other morbid RESP), infants who require mechanical ventilation (ventilation), proven sepsis (sepsis) and neonatal deaths.
