Be cautious if you are a Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star pitcher before the break. Pitchers are 34 % more likely to be injured defenders, according to a study presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Annual Meeting. The study focused on the epidemiology of injuries MLB players ‘from 2002 to 2008. It also found that 77 % of all injuries occur to pitchers before the All-Star Game.
With regard to the time of injury, 74.4 % of all MLB players accidents ‘took place before the break-Star Game. Pitchers sustained 76.5 % and 71.7 % of total fielders backed up their wounds their pre-game All-Star. Seventy-nine % of all injuries to the shoulder and elbow happened to pitchers before the game All-Star and 74.8 % of all the hamstrings, quadriceps and injuries to ‘groin as a basis for players of the field occurred before the All-Star Game.
National League or American League? The study found that the distribution of injuries per anatomical region was almost identical between the NHL and AHL players when all players (pitchers and defenders) were considered. National League players injured their upper end 51.7 per cent of the time, the lower ends 30.7 % and 17.7 % other anatomical regions.
American League players injured their upper end 51.1 % of the time, the lower ends 30.5 per cent and other anatomical regions of 18.4 %, according to the study.
